Annotation: The article deals with the actual for modern museology problems associated with the attribution of museum objects. It is determined whether there is a need to shift the focus from the applied forms of stock activity to their theoretical justification. Acceptance of attribution is considered as part of the methodology used in establishing the authenticity of items of museum value, along with methods of systematization and interpretation. Using the example of ethnographic museum objects, the methods of identifying their attribute characteristics are specified, taking into account general criteria: informativeness, attractiveness, expressiveness, representativeness and associativity, and private: name, material, manufacturing techniques, functional purpose, etc. The essence of the criteria is revealed with specific examples of Shor ethnographic collections from museums of Russia. The use of attribution methods in order to identify information fields of museum objects is justified from the standpoint of the semiotic approach. The concept of interpretation in the framework of the hermeneutic campaign based on museum and scientific sources is proposed. Leading principles determine compliance with the criteria of authenticity, scientific. As intramuseum forms of translation of the results of the interpretation of museum objects, the following information was defined: publication of the information received its inclusion in the text of the exposition and use in various forms of museum activities.
