Annotation: The article is aimed at studying the historical information about the traditional performance of the South of Russia. Concert performances of folk musicians of the South of Russia in Moscow in the 1970-80s allowed a wide range of listeners to get acquainted with the unique color of folk polyphony, and to see in original form the traditional choreography. These performances made an indelible impression on contemporary composers, writers, artists and served as a powerful impetus to the development of the folklore movement. As a result, the Southern Russian region became a place for regular scientifi c research expeditions, scientifi c and creative laboratories of all-Union scale, whose activities were refl ected in numerous publications of articles, monographs, music collections, audio recordings, video fi lms, photo albums. The active interest of collectors, the demand for folk musicians at the capital’s concerts contributed to the activation of folk singing, and the preservation of the traditional singing manner. This article presents an analytical overview of the notations of the folk songs of the region, highlights the activities of outstanding folklore groups that participated in the capital’s ethnographic concerts, compiled a list of records recorded at the All-Union Recording Studio, and discovered authentic sources that served as the main material for the creation of popular vocal instrumental compositions of the groups “Ariel” and “Ivan Kupalo” in the form of the translation of the folk song into the modern Slavic world.
