MODERN BUDDHIST ICON IN THE ART OF NIKOLAY DUDKO AS AN EXAMPLE OF FOLLOWING THE CLASSICAL TIBETAN TRADITION

Annotation: Traditional Buddhist painting thangka at the turn of XX–XXI centuries and the problem of its modern state is a topical question. On one side, popular thangka brush work is a combination of various styles or borrowing some elements or details from one style to another. On the other side, paintings of a number of modern thangka artists are characterized by the continuance of certain icon painting traditions. This article reviews the state of Buddhist icon in XXI century in case of Nikolay Dudko (Ulan-Ude, Buryat Republic) paintings. The art of Nikolay Dudko is a perfect example of conservation of classic Buddhist traditions in the XX century. His early brush work is defi ned by the combination of style elements of various artistic schools, but after his professional development Nikolay Dudko gained a venia docendi diploma of thangka artist in Central Tibetan menri style. The art review of various Nikolay Dudko’s thangkas allowed to defi ne main features of menri style presented in his works which remained unchanged to the present day. Also this analysis contributed to the determination of the icons created by Nikolay Dudko before his professional development. As the result of comparative analysis and description of N. Dudko’s thangkas (from the artist’s own collection and from the collection of Sukachev Irkutsk Regional Art Museum) we defi ned certain elements of the artist’s unique style and brush work and the possibilities of canon interpretation under conditions of self-given entity and reviewed the aspects of following classical tradition in XX century: author’s explication within canonical style.
