Annotation: Since the Ussuri region joined the Russian Empire in 1860, the Chinese was considered by authorities exclusively as a ‘harmful’ element of the colonization of the region. And this approach is fully supported among local officials and military personnel. This is partly due to the feeling of a ‘yellow peril’. On the other hand, Slavic settlers in the Ussuri region directly competed with the Chinese for the same agricultural land. In addition, the Chinese subjects did not obey the requirements of the Russian authorities, they could not be controlled. It was especially noted that the Chinese in inhuman form exploited the aboriginal. However, the real relationship between the aborigines and the Chinese was much more complicated, especially in the cultural sphere. The purpose of this work is to give an objective assessment of the cultural influence of the Chinese on the Aboriginal of Ussuri region in the pre-revolutionary period. The authors of this article use the unpublished field diaries of Vladimir Arsenev (1906-1909) as well as the little-known work of Sergei Brailovsky ‘Tazy or Udihe’ (1902) as the main sources. The focus of the article is on the problems of living together of Chinese and Aborigines in some villages, appearance of new types of economic activities and changes in everyday life. The authors of this paper also attempt to compare different groups of aborigines according to the degree of influence of the Chinese and draw a conclusion about the mechanism of adaptation of a small ethnic group to a new cultural environment.

Keywords: Chinese, Aborigines, Ussuri region, cultural interaction, everyday life, customs, adaptation.
