Annotation: The article raises the subject of the existence of non-profit theatres in the United States of America. An artistic theatrical ensemble cannot develop either without creative ideas or without additional public sources of financing, which seems to be relevant for Russia nowadays. The type of a chamber theatre is a common form in the sphere of the nonprofit theatre groups in the United States of America. The nature of the chamber form reflects the development of theatre groups on the example of the previously existing American “little” theatres and European groups. The creative and organizational principles of the “4th Street Theatre” by David Ross reflect the development of new principles of the non-profit movement. Psychological drama required a small room, a minimum space between artists and audience, what completely corresponded to the type of chamber drama theatre. Forming around the bright creative individuality, what David Ross was, the troupe wanted to show the results of its work to the audience. Long-term planning of the repertoire made it possible to introduce a subscription system, consolidate theatre’s spectator and make him permanent. This gave relative financial stability for the development and creative perfection for the run of the classical repertoire. David Ross managed to assemble a talented troupe, what significantly improved, according to the contemporaries, the quality of the performances. The number of some of them, even for today’s dramatic theatres, was a record. The unique creative way of development of the “4th Street Theatre” and the repertoire policy, based on the plays of H. Ibsen and A. Chekhov, made the theatre unique for its time.
Keywords: chamber theatre, A. Strindberg, The Kamerny Theatre by Tairov, David Ross, H. Ibsen, “Cherry Orchard,” “Uncle Vanya,” A. Chekhov, the “4th Street Theatre”.
