“RUSSALKA” BY KONSTANTIN BALMONT IN THE RUSSIAN ROMANCE

Annotation: One of the favorite themes in culture of the 19-20th centuries is the mermaid one. This theme is realized in the various kinds of art. There are a lot of operas, chamber-vocal works, poetry, ballads, stories and novels by different authors in the romantic epoch and at the turn of the 19-20th centuries. The great popularity of mermaid theme causes the ways of realization the image of sea maiden and determines many expressive means, which help composers, writers and poets embody these images in the art. The article discusses the archetypical image of the mermaid in the romances of Vladimir Butsov, Mikhail Ostroglazov and Reingold Glier on the text by Konstantin Balmont. The attention is paid to a lot of aspects: dramaturgy, melodic, modal and textural features, general compositional principles and intertextual relations between romances and other works about the mermaid theme. The ambivalence of the image of the sea maiden is particularly emphasized. This makes different composers to turn to similar ways of the embodiment of the image in their works on the mermaid theme. The musical characteristics of mermaid created by Butsov, Ostroglazov and Glier are correlated with the context of other imprintings of these images in the musical art. It is emphasized in the article that the ways of a description of the heroine which were found by Butsov, Ostroglazov and Glier in their romances were correlated with those resorted to by other authors. This allows to make a conclusion that a lot of intertextual relations are conditioned of archetypical image of the sea maiden.
