Annotation: This publication analyses the content published by the “Vologda Provincial Gazette” about the events of the musical life in Vologda from 1838 and until the end of the XIX century. This publication describes the first attempt of the holistic analysis of all information available in the newspapers of the second half of the XIX century. This publication is relevant due to the need for incorporating information about the musical life into the overall regional musical research, which is currently carried out in many Russian cities and towns. The newspaper’s articles confirm that the key areas of the Vologda musical life were the musical theatre, concert tours of professional musicians, concerts by local musicians and music lovers, as well as musical education. Information about those areas is presented in various types of newspaper content such as reviews, announcements, brief news stories, overviews, advertisements and mentions in lists of arriving and departing persons. This research has identified three periods with varied intensity of newspaper publications about musical life. The content published in the 1850s and beginning of 1860s is emotional and includes characteristics of the music played, as well as special terminology. The content published in the end of the century mostly informs about the event, its charitable purposes and people attending it. This study includes earlier unpublished information about the Vologda tour of the first professional Russian piano duet – Pogozhev sisters – as well as violinist Afanasyev, and concerts for local music lovers. Concert repertoire is discussed, as well as its particularities. This publication concludes that the articles published by the “Vologda Provincial Gazette” are a reliable source of historical data, confirms the current knowledge about the development of arts in Vologda in the second half of the XIX century, as well as expands this knowledge.
