THE OPERA “THE LEFT-HANDER” BY RODION SHCHEDRIN: THE RIDDLE OF THE RUSSIAN GENIUS AND HIGH TEMPERATURE OF THE PLOT

Annotation: The article is about the interpretation of the plot of Nikolai Leskov’s novel “The Left-hander” in the one-name opera by Rodion Shchedrin. The author of this work examines the history of creation, the idea of the Opera by R. Shchedrin and the text of the libretto written by the composer himself. The article analyzes the difficulties of translating Leskov’s prose from literary to musical space, Shchedrin’s approaches to the embodiment of the novel “The Left-hander,” which are based on Orthodoxy, Russian folklore and the desire to convey in all subtleties of the Russian national character. The paper pays special attention to the unusual synthetic genre solution of the Opera, originality of composition and dramaturgy, principles of musical characteristics and original musical language. Based on the study of literature, the author examines the complex mix of genre with the origins of the works of N. Leskov that had an impact on the interpretation of the genre of the Opera by R. Shchedrin and a stylistic musical language. The article focuses on the brightness, individuality of Shchedrin’s musical thinking and his high skill as a theatrical composer. The author emphasizes the combination of traditions of Russian Opera classics and innovation in Shchedrin’s use of such dramatic techniques of modern music as parallel editing, cinematic influx, explores his virtuoso mastery of orchestral and choral writing. The article also discusses the features of staging the Opera “The Left-hander” at the Mariinsky Theatre.
