Annotation: The article discusses the connection and dependence of the relation to the historical and cultural heritage during the change of ideology in a society. These changes are especially active during the periods that are critical for the country. Russia, constantly shaken by social transformations, has repeatedly experienced a reassessment of its historical and cultural heritage. In Russia, the conscious civilized attitude to the native historical and cultural heritage started as a trend at the turn of the 17th – 18th centuries following the reform of Peter the Great and strengthening the connections with the countries of Western Europe. In the end of the 18th century, the patriotic-liberal attitude was replaced by the strengthening the liberal attitude and in the first half of the 19th century, after the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812, the patriotic attitude prevailed again. In the end of the 19th century, radical tendencies appeared that prevailed since October 1917 until the middle of the 20th century. From that time on, liberal-patriotic tendencies, which are constantly strengthening, and still dominate in modern Russia, began to emerge.
Keywords: historical and cultural heritage, museums, monuments, liberalism, radicalism, patriotism, Russia, Europe, traditional national culture.
