Annotation: The topics of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 again become the subject of research of art critics and culturologists. This is due not only to the newly awakened interest in the historical events of these years. The appeal to this topic, first of all, our memory, which, as a spiritual clasp, has always connected the times and generations. Interpretation of the theme of the Russian war of 1941-1945 in the musical art covers a variety of genre spheres, but in most cases, preference is given to large vocal-symphonic canvases. The more interesting is the study of this topic in examples of chamber choral music, for instance, in the genre of the choral cycle, which extremely rarely becomes an object of study of musicologists. The article analyzes the choral cycles of R. Shchedrin and A. Eshpay. Both works are dedicated to the brothers of composers who have not returned from the war. Analogies are being made and the differences in author’s approaches are stressed in the reflection of the figurative sphere and drama of the cycle, in the use of techniques and means of musical expressiveness. The focus is on the detailed work of composers over the poetic text and its musical embodiment. It is the kind of interrelation between music and words that allows them to accurately convey in each choral miniature of the cycle a system of images of the poems chosen by them.
Keywords: genre of choral cycle, topics of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, R. Shchedrin, A. Eshpay, relationship of music and words.
