POPULARIZATION OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES

Annotation: The article deals with the actual issues of scientific literacy rising in different strata of population. Science popularization has been the subject in both, academic and non-academic communities, in many countries of the world. The article reviews the definition of the term “science literacy” and describes its information aspect as the basic one. The article shows that scientific literacy is crucial for government officers, which are responsible for political, social, economic and cultural development of the country. The scientific background helps citizens from different social groups to overcome new fast-moving risks and challenges. The role of higher education in preparing the individuals for critical thinking and deep understanding of scientific knowledge is outlined. The article investigates activities of an international organization (UNESCO) and national professional associations in creating the conditions for acceptance of modern science achievements by society. It is stressed out that library specialists working in public libraries must play an important role in science knowledge translation to different groups of citizens. The priority attention is paid to sociocultural technologies of scientific knowledge promotion in public libraries in foreign countries. The necessity in information services advancement and special projects in traditional and virtual formats organization are justified.
