Annotation: The work contains an attempt of comprehending a new phenomenon of the 20th century: “The Theater of Masses” in the system of contemporary art. A hundred years have passed since the appearance and development of “The Theater of Masses.” Certain traditions have been developed in it. New directions, forms and genres are appearing and developing also. The paper discusses the problem of uncertainty with the present stage of the terminological apparatus of “The Theater of Masses.” Its structure and place in the system of modern art also stay uncertain. The work emphasizes a certain danger of turning “The Theater of Masses” into a craft. The literature is considered where the phenomenon under study is encountered in one form or another: “folk theater,” “theater of participation,” “mass theater,” “theater of mass forms,” “non-traditional theater” and also suggests terminology and typology as part of the stated problem. “The Theater of Masses” is considered as syncretic-synthetic form of theatrical art, where its scriptwriting drama and stage incarnation contains an integration of simple forms of art and document at an angle of artistic and imaginative decision and embodied in small or large forms. A small form is a theatrical performance and a large form is a holiday. A sign of the genre of the proposed typology is the technology of the stage embodiment of documentary and artistic material.
