FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF COSPLAY FESTIVALS IN THE USA, JAPAN AND RUSSIA

Annotation: The article describes the process of formation and development of cosplay festivals in the USA, Japan and Russia. The article analyzes three points of view on the origin of cosplay, which depend on the geographical location. In the USA, the evolution of cosplay was related to The World Science Fiction Convention. Furthermore, there was the process of cosplay transformation from local hobby to the professional competition. Moreover, the cosplay performances evaluation criteria was created. That is why the article focuses on The World Science Fiction Convention. The description of Japanese experience is based on two events: the Comic Market and the World Cosplay Summit, both of which have different organizational structure. At the Comic Market, cosplayers are located in “exhibition space,” they do not have an opportunity to make any performances, therefore they can represent their costumes only by making photographs. At the World Cosplay Summit, cosplayers take part in cosplay performance competition, where they can use wide range of forms of artistic expression. The research of Russian cosplay festivals development focuses on transformation of scenic program. Moreover, it describes the changes in subcultural background of cosplay festivals because they need to be in context of modern culture. The conclusion were drawn that the process of cosplay formation in the early stages was isolated in the USA and Japan. Further, the interinfluence between the two cultures took place because of the world globalization process. That leads to increasing of artistic and technical cosplay level and unification of cosplay all over the world.
