Annotation: The article draws attention to the tough balance between innovation and tradition, which has been an issue throughout the history of humanity. In the 20th century and present time, due to the rapid development of information technologies, modernization and tradition are in constant interaction and opposition, more than ever before. In this article, the author addresses a synthesis of new artistic trends and traditional foundations of culture, examining several modern works presented by Azerbaijan at major international exhibitions. According to the article, the artistic traditions formed in the 1960s-1980s, have a great impact on today’s art school. Contemporary Azerbaijani artists convey the layers of pre-Islamic culture that form the basis of the Azerbaijani school of visual arts: medieval miniature, calligraphy, traditional ornament and carpet pattern. Though traditional images are often distorted, hypertrophied, or stereotyped, Azerbaijan, in general, manages to avoid such tendencies. In conclusion, the author notes a quite successful combination of modernity and tradition in art that contributes to the preservation of the Azerbaijani cultural heritage and actuates movement with the times. At the level of fine art, traditional images of culture are effectively preserved, acquiring some refraction and renewal in the context of modern artistic trends, while the “traditional genome” of Azerbaijani culture has remained unchanged.
Keywords: modern culture of Azerbaijan, traditional foundations of Azerbaijani culture, artistic traditions.
