Annotation: Today, the true meaning of icons, despite the theological justification of icon-veneration existing in Christianity, is still implicit for many people. Therefore, it seems necessary to pay due attention to the study of the metaphysical content of the phenomenon under study as one of the tenets of the Church. The theological research based on the approved worship of images, dogma of the veneration of icons, analysis of the doctrine aimed at explaining its theological sense, justification of the characteristics of its terms was paid some attention. The article reveals the conditions that influenced the formation of the dogma of iconoclasm and its individual formulations. In this regard, it considers the peculiarities of the worship of icons to the approval of the dogma of the veneration of icons, the history of iconoclasm and the arguments of the deniers of icons, the nature of the arguments of the defenders of icon-veneration by the example of the writings of John of Damascus, and analyzes the wording of the text of the dogma of the veneration of icons. As a result of the study, we came to the following conclusions. The tradition of veneration by Christians of sacred images existed already in the first centuries after the birth of Christ. However, this custom was not always perceived unambiguously, and the Church did not have a public establishment concerning it. The iconoclastic trend that captured many Christians made it necessary for the Church to develop a holistic doctrine of the veneration of icons. This problem was posed in the VII Ecumenical Council, set forth the dogma of the veneration of icons. The text of the dogma is a justification of the godliness of the icons and the Canon of their veneration. Its wording not only reveals the teaching of the Church about icons, but also represents a refutation of certain arguments of the iconoclastic Council. In particular, the dogmatic justification of the veneration of icons is due to the specific comments of the iconoclasts.
