Annotation: Russian composers Sergei Eduardovich Bortkevich (1877-1952), Alexander Tikhonovich Grechaninov (1864-1956) and Alexander Nikolaevich Tcherepnin (1899-1977) use the example of plays from children's piano albums of composers from abroad to consider the diversity and ambiguity of approaches to the issue of portraying musical characters. The relevance of the article is determined by the necessity for a comprehensive study of the musical portrait, which acquires a different aesthetic perspective, while preserving the patterns of traditions of the best samples of world piano music for children, in the first half of the XX century. The portrait of emigrant composers, viewed from various angles – subgenre varieties, content features, typology of characters, image language – emphasizes individuality, variability and ambiguity of the musical image, individual creative approach. The comparative-typological method of analyzing the techniques of creating a portrait made it possible to identify its specifics. In particular, in the work of Bortkevich, portraiture techniques appeal to a literary prototype, the portrait of Grechaninov is abstract, and the portrait of Tcherepnin combines all these principles. The problems in the study of the musical portrait are outlined. As a result of the research, it was noted that a musical portrait is perhaps the best form of transmitting external, national, age, social, professional and psychological characteristics of the image.
Keywords: Bortkiewicz, Gretchaninov, Cherepnin, musical portrait, children's piano album, image, character.
