Annotation: The article examines the specifics of musical theory in ancient China, the origins of which date back to the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C. The author also evaluated the specifics of the influence of traditional religious treatises, such as Confucianism and Taoism, on the main directions of musical art. The relevance of this study is due to the fact that in modern society there is an increasing interest in the musical traditions of China in view of the extensive scientific research devoted to this subject, the creative achievements and successes of local musicians-performers, which are covered in the international media, as well as the increase in cultural exchanges between representatives of different nations. The purpose of this article is to analyze the peculiarities of traditional Chinese musical philosophy. The obtained results of the work consist in the following statements: firstly, the musical-theoretical system of ancient China was closely connected with Confucianism and Taoism. Secondly, the following features of musical culture existed in ancient China - the importance of pentatonic and the dominance of word over melody. Their understanding not only enriches the idea of the sound of Chinese music, but also reveals the deep cultural roots that formed the basis for the development of musical art in this country. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that its author considered the achievements of the Chinese in the musical sphere in the calculated historical interval, determined the role and functions of art in ancient society, as well as summarized the available theoretical data related to the musical instruments that were popular among the locals.
