Annotation: The article is devoted to the consideration of stage and social dance as cultural phenomena. Traditionally, dancing “for oneself” is called social, or playful, dance. Dance “for the audience” is usually called stage dance. Both dances are cultural phenomena, but in scientific literature, especially domestic literature, attention is paid, first of all, to classical stage dance. This article aims to define the essential features of social and stage dance, to highlight their common and special features. The dialectical method was used to solve the set goal, which allowed us to consider stage and social dance as phenomena, opposing and simultaneously interacting with each other. Methods of comparison, generalization, analysis and synthesis. Considering the generic concept – “dance”, the authors refer to the concepts of the origin of dance. Three concepts of the origin of dance are examined in detail: cosmological, biological and sociocultural. The identification of essential features allowed us to formulate a definition of dance as a sociocultural phenomenon that transmits the spiritual, physical, sensual-emotional experience of people through rhythmic movements, which are usually associated with musical accompaniment. The authors address the phenomena of social and stage dance, highlighting their essential features. The authors are convinced that both social and stage dance are cultural phenomena, but stage dance is already a work of art, the purpose of which is to create an artistic image that expresses not only the personal worldview of the creator and performer of the dance, but also an expression of the spirit and mood of the time. It is concluded that stage and social dance are types of dance that both have their own specific characteristics and are unthinkable in complete isolation from each other, as there are a number of forms of their close interaction.
