Annotation: The relevance of the cultural study of travelogue is connected with its growing popularity in modern society, the ever-increasing number of publications in this genre. The foundations of the travelogue in Russian literature were laid by the writers of the XIX century, in this connection it is interesting to analyse the works of the famous philologist, public figure, translator and traveller N.I. Grech - "Travel Letters from England, Germany and France", published in 1839, and "Paris Letters with Notes on Denmark, Germany, Holland and Belgium", published in 1847. The aim of the study was to identify a common through-image represented on the pages of N.I. Gretsch's travelogue. The tasks solved in this work are connected with the implementation of the content analysis of the text; the establishment of the means of formation of the main through-image of the work; the specification of the axiological meaning of the revealed image. We used methods aimed at studying a specific transversal image through the analysis of its objectification in the text of the travelogue, namely: descriptive, structural method and the method of observation of the facts of objectification of cultural phenomena. The result of the study is the definition of the transversal image "Germany is a well-oiled mechanism" in N.I. Gretsch's travelling notes. The identified transversal image organises the semantic content of the travelogue text and gives it a special cultural sound. The main cultural function of the image is objectified through the transmission of cultural knowledge about Germany, experiencing the Industrial Revolution, growth and development of technology. The image is formed by linguistic means, means of expressiveness, through a variety of details aimed at description or narration. The creation of a through image helps the author to communicate to the reader a positive evaluation of the country through which the journey takes place. The expressive function of the image is that it, including evaluative and expressive components, contributes to strengthening the expressiveness of the travelogue text.
