Annotation: The article presents a brief history of the study of mass musical culture in Novosibirsk State Glinka Conservatoire from the 1970s to the present day. In the origins, it is connected with the scientific, pedagogical and educational activities of Vladimir Mikhailovich Kaluzhsky. Interest in so-called nonartificial genres in Novosibirsk Conservatoire had originated long before the emancipation of ‘light’ music in the domestic musicology (focused mainly on the classical academic and folklore layers) and in the university educational system, many years ahead the emergence of a special academic discipline, now mandatory for educational programs in specialties “Musicology”. Attention to the styles of popular music was due to the status of Novosibirsk as a major jazz center of the country, the need for the inclusion of the course “Criticism of bourgeois culture” in a number of disciplines for members of the Komsomol asset of the Conservatoire (within the framework of which it was supposed to carry out the study and professional discussion of the phenomena of foreign and domestic mass-cultural practice), but primarily due to personal interest of V.M. Kaluzhsky in some areas of non-academic music. Precisely the works of V.M. Kaluzhsky have led to the development of that research direction at the Conservatoire which is associated with the study of jazz and rock music, various forms of intersections between light genre and academic art. The activities of Kaluzhsky fit into the general direction of the higher education towards “non-one-sided approach” in conditions of cultural singularity and the relevance of the mass-culture direction in modern art criticism, which is connected with the processes of cultural globalization, cross-layer intersections, changes in value orientations.
