Annotation: The article reveals the main milestones in the formation and development of musical enlightenment, its typological features, and ultimately determines the nodal stages of its evolution. Based on the research of well-known scientists, the author gives a picture of the origin of musical enlightenment from the era of ancient Eastern civilizations to the events of 1917, noting that the diversity of forms and types of musical enlightenment was formed for many centuries, both in Russia and abroad. Therefore, in order to present the whole palette of this type of artistic and creative activity, it is necessary to generalize the world experience of musical enlightenment accumulated by mankind. This logic is the basis of this research. Its boundaries are expanded by understanding the category of “musical enlightenment.” This is due to the fact that the development of musical enlightenment, the formation of educational activity, familiarization of the population with musical enlightenment during the global changes in human consciousness caused by dynamic technogenic processes, is becoming an increasingly urgent necessity. At the same time, they should be based on a generalization of the data of all world experience, including Russia, reflected in the diverse complex of scientific literature. In the context of correlation with the processes in the field of musical performance, the author pays attention to the domestic experience of formation and development of musical enlightenment. The article analyzes and summarizes the educational achievements of IRMO, a free music school, and the most significant features of individual musicians-educators. The author summarizes that by the beginning of the XX century, in Western Europe and Russia different forms of musical enlightenment were recognized as necessary institutions of cultural growth of the population, as an indicator of civilizational development of the state. In the Russian Empire by 1917, a turning point in all areas of life accumulated extensive experience of musical enlightenment, not inferior to Western Europe, and in some ways surpassing it.
