Annotation: The problem of theater criticism in the province is relevant to the cultural space of the region. The critic, on the one hand, interprets the current theatrical process, on the other hand, he registers facts from theatrical life, and preserves the appearance of a real-life performance for later possible historical study. At the same time, the critic, as a participant in theatrical process, acts as an independent observer and analyst, which turns him into an indispensable expert in solving the current problems of theater functioning. In modern times, there is a shortage of critical personnel in the regions, so referring to the experience of creating a special critical environment is an attempt to revise the previous period and apply the valuable in the actual practice of today. The article discusses the first stage of creating the section of critics in Novosibirsk (1960–70s). This institution became significant in the provincial art of the Soviet period; this experience is unique because it is associated with a socio-cultural situation that dictates the parameters of functioning both, theater and criticism. The paper analyzes the reasons for the emergence of this section, main steps to develop plans for its work, and problems encountered in the actual practice of this association. The final stage associates with overcoming these obstacles; the emphasis is personally on the section leader, who is able to analyze the activities of theaters both, from the standpoint of social demands and in the context of the self-development of art. The author of the article based his research on archival sources, trying to recreate the organizational process of theater criticism in one of the largest Soviet cities. The next publication will look at the activities of the section in the 1980s.

Keywords: theater, provincial criticism, institution, Soviet period.
