Annotation: This article is about searching the history of the archetype Divine Twins, one of the most common mythological images in the world culture. The aim of the study is to trace the appearance of this archetype from ancient to modern times, to offer the conception of its origin. The paper contains information about the occurrences of this image in ancient traditional culture, mythology. Historical works concerning the study of the twin cults are divided into two groups: research of a common material and study of myths of different nations. Among the versions of the special relation to twins is the primordial fear of a man for a birth of twins, the deification of twins as a symbol of fertility, the emergence of dual phratrial organization, etc. The study of mythology shows that the main feature of characters is their antithesis. The common features of the twin cults of all nations are their belonging to different worlds, the motif of dual paternity (relationship with the totem, gods, spirits), communication with the myths of the beginning (twin was the father of the universe, man, nation). The origin of this archetype was in ancient times: it is a moment when a man realized himself as a person, his difference from others and began to perceive the world as a sum of dual opposites. As a reflection in the mass consciousness (both ancient and modern), the deification of real twin pairs, giving them magical properties is recorded. The results of the study show that the appearance of the twin archetype was caused not by cultural reality of each man collective, but by different factors: reflective thinking complication of the human psyche in the process of isolation of Homo Sapiens from the nature, the emergence of creative thinking and the ability to give real phenomena of wildlife symbolic value (for example the fact of birth of biological twins to perceive as a symbol of antithesis).
Keywords: archetype, Divine Twins, mythology, traditional intellection, duplicity, antithesis.
